[ the smile that lingers over his mouth is just a wee bit smug, an unspoken a'course you do as the pair of them round the corner. ]

We shouldn't stay long. Just enough to get a few things you know- before we hav'to start looking for the others.

[and he does a little skip to get a little ahead of merry, turning his head to look into his face without a) tripping or b) walking into something]

You don't think the others are here too, do you? Really? Certainly Frodo wouldn't?

Well we don't know if we don't go an' see for ourselves.

I wouldn't have even known you were here if I didn't see you straight away. Last time I saw you- [ the words are abruptly bitten off ]

[it's about then that Pippin's head catches up with the rest of him, and it's there in the abrupt end of Merry's words. the fact was he'd been so caught up in being here with him in a place that was so curious and strange that he hadn't given himself time to think about anything else.

of course, that's probably both a blessing and a curse for the young Took.

it draws him up short, either way, stopping dead, because Frodo and the others being here is almost too much to bear. the prospect of seeing them had excited him at first, but now...]

But— what about the quest?

[ it falters inbetween them. time and space and memory. the things neither one of them are saying. merry remembers watching pip go riding out, with gandalf at his back. he remembers not knowing when, if they'd ever see each other again. he remembers not knowing what to say and then being unable to say anything at all-

but then pippin is looking at him, and they both go unnaturally still. watching one another, looking for some sort of hint, some clue. merry considers asking, he does, but at the last moment the words don't come out. ]

[Pippin can see it, in the flicker of Merry's eyes. they'd been thick as thieves before this whole thing happened, and some things? you don't lose them. miles could put them apart (and had), but even though they were both irrevocably changed, that would always stay the same.

there are things on both his own tongue and Merry's that neither of them are saying. there's no telling if Merry will ever ask, but Pippin is sure he won't be able to keep it bottled up forever.

still, he knows Gandalf would have a thing or two to say about this moment. wizards always do, and not for the first time Pippin finds himself missing the white wizard, because he isn't so good at that sort of thing. great speeches weren't for Peregrin Took.

his gaze cuts down, and as if to permeate the tension suddenly there, his stomach rumbles again.]
