You'd be surprised what you could use as a weapon if you were hard pressed.
The woman wandering sluggishly along with a gun hanging from her right hand, however, looks like she might have stumbled out of a warzone, stunned and lost. ]
Hello? Can I help you?
no subject
The voice, though it might sound friendly, is met with her gun pointed in Bruce's direction.
She stumbles again, using her free hand on the wall to steady herself.]
Last person who asked me that tried to kill me, so no, I don't think so.
no subject
It's okay. I understand, all of this must be very difficult for you. It was for me, too. [ A pause. ] I feel terribly stupid holding this thing up here like this. I'm going to just put the can opener down now, is that okay?
What's your name?
no subject
As he sets the can opener down, she edges away a bit, still using the wall to steady herself. At least she lowers the gun slightly.]
Lara. My friends and I were just rescued. We were stranded on an island. Where are they?
no subject
They're probably not here, but if you were being rescued, then they're still safe. [ Bruce can't imagine how that feels. Nobody he left behind mattered to him quite like that, at least he didn't think so. He ought to know better, really. ] Has anyone told you anything? Do you know where you are?
no subject
[Are her friends really safe?]
It's my responsibility to take care of them. To get them home.
[And she takes that very seriously.]
This is a ship, isn't it?
[She huffs with soft laughter and slides to the ground against the wall. The gun is lowered some more.]
In space? I feel like I'm going mad.
no subject
[ Bruce takes just a cautious step forward, then crouches down. The hallways here are wide enough that he's still unthreatening. ]
I thought I was too. Actually, I thought I was dead. The last thing I remember is my family's ancestral home burning down around me. I woke up here right after that.
[ A wary smile. ]
You might feel better if you drank something. Some cold water, perhaps? The kitchen isn't far from here.
no subject
Lara slowly moves the pistol to her belt. It isn't the only weapon she's carrying, either. There's another pistol, a bow slung to her back, and her belt has several tools hanging from them. She really does look like she was surviving on an island.]
Where is it?
[The talk of some water definitely interests her.]
no subject
[ She has the gun away, and Bruce lowers himself back to pick up his can opener, hanging it on his own belt and stepping ahead of her, leading the way. ]
There's a kitchen the same on every floor. I've been here for a few jumps now, so usually I stay some levels down from here. There should be more than just water, if you'd rather have something else.
It's Bruce, by the way. Bruce Wayne; you may have heard of me?
no subject
She follows after Bruce in the direction of the kitchen.]
Honestly, I'm famished.
[She didn't get the chance to really eat before showing up here. As for his name, he gets a slight smile.]
Sorry, I don't know it. Do people usually know your name where you're from?
no subject
[ There, she's smiling. It's a good start. The kitchen, once they enter it, is massive and well stocked, as they are on every floor. ]
How did you end up stranded?
no subject
Strange to think people here come from different worlds.
[Once in the kitchen, she goes right to get herself a drink of water. After what she went through, she's not ashamed of drinking it like someone who hasn't seen a glass of water in a week.]
This sure beats rainwater. I feel practically civilized again.
[A sigh and she leans against the counter.]
I was on a ship. We were on an archeological expedition, searching for the lost civilization of Yamatai. We went into the Dragon's Triangle, southeast of Japan and the ship went down in a storm.
no subject
[ And he's well traveled, well read. When she drinks the water he remembers it very well; the taste of fresh water after days without. It's lessons like that which make his experiences over the last seven years so useful.
He finds some dried pasta and gathers some of the fresh vegetables recently brought up from the gardens. ]
I'm afraid I only recently learned to cook, but it can't be much worse than nothing at all.
no subject
Very good.
[The offer to cook gets a bemused look.]
Compared to hunting and flaying my own meals? I'll adore your cooking.
no subject
[ But he's boiling the pasta. There's not much finesse to it, and it'll probably end up overcooked, but Bruce can't do much better. ]
The lost civilization of Yamatai, you said. Did you have some idea of where you were going, exactly?
no subject
[And Lara was very determined to survive.]
I did a lot of studying before we set out. We'd been at sea for weeks before going into the Dragon's Triangle.
[As she spoke she sat down at a table, glad for the rest.]
At first, we retraced the expeditions of other explorers. Eventually, I figured we needed to go somewhere no one had been before and a number of myths connected Yamatai to the weather phenomenons inside the Triangle.
no subject
And besides a reminder of the hazards of the triangle, did you find any hint of civilisation?
no subject
The place was overrun by a cult that worshiped Yamatai's sun goddess, Himiko.
Unfortunately, they weren't friendly. Most of us didn't get out alive.
[There's a lot of regret when she says that.]
no subject
[ As a mark of respect, of course. Finding a jug, Bruce refills Lara's water, then returns to his sauce. The pasta has come to the boil now, and it'll all be ready soon. ]
You must have your own questions about the ship?
no subject
[Once she's rested and settled in, perhaps. The refill of her glass earns another slight smile as thanks.]
Knowing what we're all doing here would be great.
no subject
[ Bruce returns to his cooking. He has to stay on top of it now so that it doesn't burn while the pasta finishes cooking. ]
None of us really know why we're here. We only know that it's not so easy to get back as it was for us to come in the first place.
no subject
[And if people here are all from worlds other than this one, there's a good chance none of them know how to deal with this.]
So, what are we to do in the meantime?
no subject
[ The slightest smile, and finally, done, Bruce clips off the heat and carries his pans over to serve the meal at the table. ]
I have the heart of an explorer, but I'm afraid the soft hands of a billionaire. I'm not much good outside of my comfort zone.
[ Such lies. Gotta get them in early. ]
no subject
You look fit enough.
[Hard not to notice. Lara smiles.]
You can make the world your comfort zone, Bruce. I had a proper upbringing myself. My parents where Richard and Amelia Croft, Lord and Lady of Abbington.
[She laughs a little at the title.]
Half my childhood was spent running about the estate and the other half was spent accompanying father on his archeological digs since I was five years old.
Despite what happened at Yamatai, I don't think I can go back to my old life. Not anymore.
no subject
Good to know when he's right. ]
I celebrated my thirtieth birthday a few months ago; a change of pace now seems like a bad idea, and in any case, there are plenty of people around here willing to risk their lives so I don't have to.
It's not cowardice so much as I'd hate to get in the way. You understand, right?
