Huh... There's a mistletoe right above you... That's weird, it's Decemb-- oh wait. December is the perfect time to get stuck under the mistletoe with someone. And look! There's a someone else stuck with you under there right now! And, of course, you both can't move until you kiss one another (Of course, not specifying where that kiss needs to happen).

Let's start off December with a little holiday cheer!

[ arthur holds his chin high. STOICISM. STOICISM IS THE WAY TO GO HERE. ]

This is definitely a twist on the... tradition.

Ahah. Yeah. Right? So weird. [ S-SO STOIC. GWEN'S JUST SO IMPRESSED. because she's nervously shifting around like she's going to find some sort of technological way out of this. buttons to press! codes! encryptions! safety protoc-

they have to kiss don't they. :| ]

You wouldn't happen to know any alternative traditions that include mistletoe, would you?

[ arthur presses his lips together, looking resentfully up at the little plant for a moment. ]

I'm afraid not.

[ and then back at her, and the hint of a smile he gives her is sympathetic. ]

Well, could be worse.

[introuble]

[ oh bahh, so much for saving face through this. of course it could be worse, there are much worse things than being stuck under mistletoe with a knight who's actually pretty charming in a medieval way and it's so absurd that she can't help but duck her face for a second, eventually reaching up to tuck her hair behind her ear before she nods and looks up again ]

It could be, certainly.

[ except there's this ( not-so ) tiny voice that sounds an awful lot like Peter Parker in the back of her mind which is kind of rocking her with guilt. but it's not like that! they're stuck. so. what else can they do? oh god, she'll have to tell Peter later. that's going to be awkward. ]

So, um. Do you have any objections to the female making the first move?

[ SO SHE'LL KEEP THINGS LIGHT. HA HA HA SEE HOW EASY THIS IS? no big deal! none at all! ]

[ Arthur pretends to think about it. ]

Yes.

[ And then he puts a hand at her hip, slides another to the back of her neck, and tugs her in to be kissed. ]

[ It's not as though he doesn't have his own Gwen, with whom things are uncertain but also steady enough that he knows this isn't quite this side of honourable. But surely there's no true harm in a kiss, when it's nothing more than a way to free themselves. And if he makes it sweet, if he parts his lips for her, it's surely only to make the whole experience more bearable. ]

[ oh!

it takes her a second to respond - sort of like being pushed when she's not ready for it - and she reels a bit before she manages to kiss him back. if she favors his bottom lip, it's not because she means to sort of rush along exactly, it's just that he's taller and when his lips part it seems natural to do so. her hands end up sort of holding onto his arms, one near his shoulder, the other gripping his forearm, because it seems wrong to not do anything with her hands, but also kind of tricky because pulling him any closer would be. bad. most likely. so his arms! right! arms are safe. right?

thinking is hard when you're kissing someone new, that's her final conclusion here. ]

[ for all that it's a nice kiss, he also makes it a relatively short one, pulling back with a soft exhale. ]

Well.

[ abruptly he thinks to let her go, and does so, taking his hands back and stepping away from hers. ]

Thank you.

[ he says it very gravely. it's probably the most awkward and unnecessary thanks in the whole universe. ]

[Just gonna look at Arthur and then awkwardly away. Oh gods, is he going to have to reveal his secret to get out of this?!?]

No.

[ This has actually already happened to him once today, but that, while embarrassing, was at least not hideously unpleasant. He'd thought he wouldn't have to worry in the rooms themselves, but it had got them just outside the doorway, mistletoe growing where there had been no mistletoe before. ]

[ And Merlin standing there, as stuck as he. ]

Absolutely not. No.

[ Arthur folds his arms, stubborn. ]

[servant]

[Embarrassing? Merlin's encounter was life-threatening don't talk to him about embarrassing.]

[It is, though.]

Why are you looking at me like that, it's not my fault!

[king]

Isn't it?

[ He doesn't really know how it could be, but he's still going to act like it is. ]

[servant]

[Merlin stares at him, too afraid to ask Arthur how he thinks he's doing this, of anything that would link him and sorcery. So he goes with the other obvious question.]

Why would I? Look, all I wanted was to get back to my chambers without getting caught underneath another one of these bloody plants! But here I am.

[He huffs.]

Honestly, I think it must be your fault.

[king]

My fault.

[ He whips back to face Merlin, which is a terrible idea, given they're standing quite close. ]

Believe me, Merlin, if I wanted to kiss you, you'd be kissed.

[ Because Arthur has always been so forthright and uncomplicated in matters of the heart. ]

[servant]

[Merlin tries to take a step back, almost loses his balance when he finds himself rooted in place.]

Not without my permission you wouldn't, you cad!

[He blinks at Arthur, outraged. And then clicks his tongue.]

Come on, let's get it over with.

NOT HERE

[chambermaid]

[and then gwen comes and smooshes their faces together.]

OH REALLY??

[servant]

[WHAT IF MERLIN GRABS HER AND HOLDS HER THERE TOO? WHAT THEN??]

YES RLY

[chambermaid]

[ WELL.... THEN SHE'LL KISS EACH OF THEM AND MAKE THEM KISS. YES. THIS WORKS OUT FINE.]

[king]

[ just fine. ]

[ Arthur reaches up and fists his shirt, both to ensure Merlin doesn't topple backwards and injure himself, and so that he can't just lean in. ]

Surely the spell will wear off eventually.

i blame canon for this.

[servant]

Yeah, when we're eighty.

[And if Arthur thinks kissing him is unpleasant now, just wait. Merlin doesn't push it though, just in case Arthur's right for a change.]

[It starts as just a wiggle. Maybe a little boredom settling in, or stiff muscles. But a few minutes more and Merlin's practically dancing in place, and starting to look a little desperate.]

Arthur.

[Don't make him say it. (But please do.)]

[ Arthur's locked his knees and is staring off into the distance, going over things in his head. It's not as though he hasn't had plenty of experience in standing for a long period of time, and he has plenty to think about. But Merlin's voice snaps him back. ]

Merlin?

[servant]

Can we just get this over with? Please? I-

[Merlin grits his teeth.]

It's very important that you kiss me right now.

[king]

[ Arthur narrows his eyes at him, smiling slightly in the way that has nothing to do with pleasant emotions. ]

Absolutely not.
